Wanda Under the Overpass: Resilience in the Shadows

During our team’s latest venture into the community, we had set out to distribute resources and care packages. However, little did we know that this endeavor would turn into an unexpected journey. Along the way, we heard and were a part of rich life stories that touched our hearts.

In contrast to our previous experiences, we were warmly welcomed by people who were eager to share their stories. Among them was Wanda, whose vibrant aura was enhanced by her impeccably styled curls and captivating eyelashes. She spoke with great pride about her children’s remarkable academic accomplishments and the prestigious scholarships they had earned. Throughout their lives, she has consistently advised them to embrace kindness and avoid passing judgment on others’ circumstances.

Despite her current living conditions under the highway, Wanda’s well-maintained appearance drew compliments from our volunteers. With heartfelt appreciation, she shared how a recent donation of wigs, purses, feminine products, and even the very eyelashes she wore had uplifted her spirits. She confidently expressed that it felt good to feel like a woman again, firmly believing that the same providence that had graced her with hair and clothes would soon extend to a long-term shelter and, eventually, an apartment.

Our team’s outreach effort was a truly enriching experience, not just for those we helped, but also for yourselves. The stories we’ve encountered, like Wanda’s, are powerful reminders of the resilience and hope that persist even in challenging circumstances.

It’s truly terrible to be without a place to sleep, the freedom to grab a snack from the fridge at night, or the privacy of a bathroom. Keep doing what you are doing.

I think it is awesome that there are so many programs and outreaches that are giving haircuts, wigs, clothes, purses and all other essentials. We all have our struggles, thank God for Outreaches.
